What makes the LX series so good?

I have been reading much about the new LX7 and the previous LX5 and even though the sensor is a little larger than the TZ/ZS series the reviews from many sites and user views seem to be very positive.

In fact some users use the LX series as a pocketable backup to a DSLR are even saying that the IQ from the LX series matches that from the GF series which I find remarkable.

Some of the images I have seen on here seem to have alot more depth to them than those from the TZ/ZS series and more detail.

My question therefore is why? Why does such a small difference in sensor size seem to deliver a much larger improvement in IQ than you might expect, that increases detail, depth and sharpness.

Is it the combination of the glass used in the high quality lens in the LX series plus the slightly larger sensor or?
