FZ200 vs Canon 550D/Sigma 18-250

Big or small, which camera is best?

I'm often confronted by people who say "How can you recomend a compact camera with their small sensors when a REAL digital camera takes so much better pictures?"
Well, my friends, I believe that the statement that a Canon DSLR takes better pictures than a Panasonic FZ200 simply is not true. If we factor in how the Canon is most frequently used.
Sure, I can get stunning results with my Canon when I fit a specialist lens, selected from my vast arsenal of boutique optics, mounted on a Manfrotto tripod weighted down with sand bags. But is this the way most people use their Canons? No. They use the kit lens or fit a 3rd party super zoom lens and go hunting for subjects to photograph. Or for the most part they simply walk around carrying their DSLR in a camera bag thinking that at least the extra weight they're hauling will provide some exercise.
The picture at the top is a moon shot with a small sensor compact Panasonic. Just point it at the moon, press the shutter, and "Hey! Presto!"
Below it is the same moon, 24 hours later, shot with a DSLR with a test-winner Sigma Super Zoom 18 - 250mm:
Both have received the appropriate treatment in software, making them as sharp and clear as possible. Even though the camera weighs twice as much and costs almost three times as much, it still produces a much less interesting picture. Not as sharp, and with lower contrast, making it harder to make it spectacular.
And all the fancy features gets in the way of a good shot - the Panasonic managed a perfect take in two shots, the Canon required fiddling about with manual exposure to get a decent result, it took me 5 minutes and 10 tries - whereas the Panasonic nailed it in two. In Post Processing, the Panasonic required cropping and slight sharpening, whereas the Canon required more complex sharpening, and still fell short.
So to all you DSLR fans out there - it's not about how many lenses you have at home, it's all about the one you carry with you...
