Just to make it a little clearer:

  • The T1i & 50D share the same 15 Mpix sensor
  • The 7D, 60D, 550D, 600D, 650D, and EOS M all share the same 18 Mpix sensor

Here is the sensor comparison:

As you can see, in RAW mode, the performance of the current crop of Canon APS-C sensors has not improved much. JPEG processing improved with the 550D, but overall the new sensors aren't worth the upgrade unless you go full frame.

The other cameras do have other interesting features, most of which make them faster (or in the case of the 7D, more accurate focusing), but the images captured are not any different.

Personally, I'm very much waiting on a new sensor from Canon that will at least come close to the performance of the Sony sensors (used by Sony, Nikon, Pentax, and Olympus).
