Re: Wide angle difference: Sony 16-50 vs Tamron 17-50

I own both and use them with my A77.

For me, those two lenses are not in the same league. The Sony gives me far better results than the Tamron. It is my best lens. I get much more impressed by this lens than by my 70-200G. Every time I review my photos taken with the 1650 I am amazed by the result resolution, even at f/2.8. I often shoot in A-Mode to force f/2.8 and keep a low ISO setting. It allows heavy cropping.

Actually the 1650 is stuck on my A77 and I only use the Tamron as a backup lens.

The Tamron is smaller and lighter, which may be important to you. It gives good results too, but 1 or 2 steps down from the Sony.

Well, these are observations based on my copies of the lenses. Maybe I was lucky with the Sony and unlucky with the Tamron. Unfortunately I have no time at the moment to post valuable comparison images.

I hope it helps
