The new MBP's seem to max out at 8 megs on the Ram?

The non-Retina MBPs have an "official" limit of 8 GB (not 8 MB!) and an "unofficial" one of 16 GB, same as their non-USB-3 predecessors.

The MacBook Airs and Retina MBPs have soldered-in RAM:  "up to" 8 GB on the Airs, 8 GB (always) on the 13" Retina MBP, "up to" 16 GB on the 15" Retina MBP.  Maxing out the RAM on these Macs at order time is a good idea because you won't get a second chance.
