It's a very valid point. I think I read somewhere that the natural DoF that our eyes see are somewhere around 50mm f/4 on full frame. I thin very shallow DoF just for the sake of it gnereally looks unnatural. But sometimes, e.g. typically dreamy flower or nature detail shots really wrok with thin DoF, but only if the bokeh smeared part integrates nicely with the main focus. And of course, if you don't have control of background and want to blur it out, shallow DoF is a tool in your box.
