50mm f/1.? for Newborn Portraits

Our newborn will be here just after Christmas, and I do want to do some newborn portraits in the style that is "in" right now ... which I like.

I realize that there is a fair amount of photoshop softening done and a fair amount of compositing from a cam on a tripod, but my main question is if I will be good with a 50mm f/1.8 on an APS-C camera (500D, 450D is what I have) or if I need to rent a 50mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.2 for the first sessions. The other decent prime lens I have is a 100mm f/2.8 USM macro, which does have more than adequately pretty bokeh.

I will get put foil on foam board to make a decent reflector for the window light (and hope to avoid using the flash) ... or maybe will just spring for a reflector.

Also, any good "how to's" on this style of infrant portraits that anyone wants to point me to?

Thanks,

Stephen
