For me the thumbs up in general means I like what you wrote here because of a multitude of possible reasons, like:

  • valuable information of which I learned something new
  • beautiful images posted in the thread
  • great comeback on a troll post
  • ...

I generally use a thumbs down when I don't like what you wrote, also for several possible reasons, like:

  • plain lies and misinformation
  • deliberate trolling 
  • foul language or insults
  • ...

So for me the voting system works as a means to show my appreciation for a positive post, and as an easy low energy way to tell the poster I didn't like/agree on his or her post.
