Can a 1000d produce good results with a good prime telephoto?
1

I have the 1000d and have been shooting long telepohoto with an old 55-200 Canon EF kit lense. This is an old kit lens from a 300d and has no stabiliser.
The results are pretty soft even when the camera is on a tripod. I can't stop down much as I am shooting action at around 1000th second.
Can I improve results with a quality prime lens or would such a lens be wasted on a 1000d and I would be better to upgrade the whole package?
I am happy with the functionality and performance of the 1000d body. Just the results are always soft. Is the 1000d capable of quality sharp results with a good lens?
Any recommendation for either 200mm or 300mm prime?
