I have long "championed" this lens as a great all-in-one choice. NO - it's not as good as a pro-level prime or zoom. But you can almost always have it with you.

I lLOVED it when I was still using a D90 and D700...I LIKE it on the D800.

Just don't EVER compare it side-by-side with the Nikkor 300mm f/2.8! I made that mistake and it cost me nearly $6,000! Once you see the difference at 300mm you simply can't believe you were ever satisfied with the 28-300 at that focal length.

On the other hand...I can't carry the f/2.8 around all the time. The little zoom is always with me
