Focusing tips for a beginner

It looks to me like you've focused in front of the trees.  The left side of the iron fence surrounding the statue and the left corner of the buildings on the left are very sharp. The foliage is behind these points and seems less sharp. What were you focusing on?  I've found that manual focus is often required for something like this because AF will seek out the sharpest lines, which in this case would be the points I mentioned. You might have achieved greater sharpness as well by dropping your shutter speed to 1/400 or 1/200 and stopping down a bit further, thereby increasing depth of field.
