How did trap focus work before? I've never had a Nikon camera before the D600, so I'm probably missing something here.

I also did not understand what trap focus is when I first heard about it.

It works when AF-ON button is used for focusing, and does the following:

1. Press AF-ON to focus on a subject at a distance you want

2. While still holding down the AF-ON button, turn the camera elsewhere, with no subject at the focused distance

3.  While still holding down the AF-ON button, press and hold the shutter release button, shutter will not fire since nothing is in focus right now (this is the crucial part which has been changed in D4/D800/D600)

4. Wait until something comes in front of the lens at a focused distance, and the camera would fire automatically when that happens.

So, this way you can set up a photographic "trap". If something gets in front of the camera at the focus distance, the camera would take a picture of it.
