Is sony Alpha DSLT/DSLR the right platform for learning photography and growth?

a few items: (adding to comments already stated)

About the only time I can think of that having sony may be a disadvantage is if you were enrolled in a photo school.  I was at visiting RIT over the weekend and didn't get a chance to check out the photo cage to see what I could borrow.  I would guess that nikon and canon would be the 35mm/dslr choice.

Otherwise you can rent Sony lenses that you may not have and want to try.

A reminder that Sony is the sibling of Minolta which means there is equipment out there...

If stabilization is important to you, EVERY lens you have will be stabilized.  You will NOT have to pay extra so C or N for that feature.
