Certainly true.  Simple P&S cameras today are far more sophisticated than the cameras used to product many historical masterpieces of photography.

2 FX will not immediately produce better looking shots (technical side)  - Most possibly worse.

Off the top of my head I can't see why they would be worse, but they will only be BETTER if technical limitations of your hardware are what is currently holding back your photography.

For on screen use, you don't need more resolution than is provided by modern P&S cameras, or even camera phones for that matter.

An FX camera WILL probably give you more dynamic range, which may or may not matter to you.   It will probably give you better high ISO performance, which again may or may not matter to you.
