24-120mm f4 VR or 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 VR?

I'm looking at upgrading to the D600 from a D90 with the 18-105mm kit lens.  I also have the 50mm 1.8D prime and the 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 VR lens.  So I need to replace the 18-105mm DX lens.

I went to a store and held both the 24-120mm and the 24-85mm yesterday and liked the feel of both -- neither too heavy for me, nor too big.  I don't *like* that the 120mm is twice as expensive as the 85mm, but I'm probably willing to pay for the difference if I decide the 120mm is worth it.   I don't like swapping lenses (or carrying alternate lenses) if I don't have to, so convenience is important.

Zooming in to 120mm and then 85mm on the other lens, the difference wasn't as profound as I'd hoped.

This would be my walking around lens -- wedding reception type photography, landscapes, chasing children, portraits, nature.   Cats -- can't forget cats!

I feel like I ought to include the 24-300mm in my list, except I already have the 70-300mm.

Thoughts?  Haven't been able to find any specific threads debating this particular situation.
