Re: Nikkor 24-120 f/3.5-5.6 G VR

I'm no fan of the 24-120 F4 and the design seems sort of cursed!

The problem with the 24-120 F4 is not that it's a bad lens. I tried two and they were okay, though never super-sharp and bordering on soft at 120mm. The VR worked well and F4 is fine.

BUT...and this is the real problem...The lens is not good enough for it's size and price. It's beaten or at least matched by the 24-85vr, which costs MUCH less and is far smaller and lighter. And that lens is even faster at the wide end. The 24-120 should have been a much better lens at the price. It's "kit lens" quality with a constant F4. That's not a bad thing since kit lenses are very good these days, but the price would allow you to buy a used 24-70 2.8 for a few dollars more. The Tamron 24-70 VC is also a GREAT option. Or buy a used Nikon 28-200G and you'll have a sharper lens again.

Of course it's not all about sharpness. The F4 gives okay bokeh and the lens is built okay....for a 600-700 dollar lens. For what it does I view the 24-120vr as the 2nd most overpriced Nikon product right behind the D800 vertical grip.

And again....for 1300 bucks I'd be crazy not to buy the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC. It's a groundbreaking lens! And if I was "stuck" on the Nikon label buying a used 24-70 2.8 in mint shape also fits in there for 1300-1500 bucks.
