I think you answer your own question.  There are waterproof compacts by all the majors, and even a DPR group test in 2011. (Read the Amazon reviews, for user experiences.)  On a shoot in foul weather, why not retire your DSLR and whip out the compact?  IQ is compromised anyway by the rain.  A waterproof will let you concentrate on the prime directive of getting the shot, rather than worrying about water damage.
