Any dSLR (or even large-ish sensor mirrorless camera) will give you plenty of scope for improvement.  generally the bigger the sensor the better, but full frame camears from Canon, Nikon or Sony are not cheap, sor APS-C (or m43) is a reasonable compromise.

Your tutor might be pushing you towards Nikon or Canon because there is supplementary equipment available to the class (probably lenses and/or flashguns)  that fits those systems, but otherwise, the offerings from Sony, Pentax, Panasonic, Samsung or Olympus will give plenty of scope.
