According to the now 3 years old Nikon patent,

Do you mean the slightly less than 2 year old (December 2010) patent application 2010-283651, which, at this date, has yet to be granted?

the sensor will be at the edge of a small box (much like the screen of a small cell-phone), which will be slotted in position from the left side (as we look at the VF eye-piece) and it will be user interchangeable....

You misread the drawing. The box is huge, and the idea is to be able to interchange a box containing just the sensor (for contrast detection AF only) with box containing a sensor and a complete contrast detection sensor system (like the sensor, mirror box, and pellicle mirror of the Sony AXX series cameras). It's obviously intended only for small cameras, i.e. Nikon 1 system size, because a box that could carry a FF sensor would be at least 28mm thick, 30mm tall, and 45mm long, a pretty dang big "cartridge", and a huge 8.4cm^2 "tunnel" through the camera.
