Have you MFA'd that lens?  also the 50 f1.8 is well known for not having the best AF.  I think it also bears mentioning that DLSRs use Bayer sensors, so post sharpening is required to counteract the antialiasing filter.  Not saying you images are as sharp as they should be, but looking at 100% views of unsharpened RAW images will always be a tad mushy, they get blurred by the camera hardware.
