I agree with the other posters so far

In camera HDR is artificially limiting.  I understand that it could be very handy if someone just doesn't want to process.

As far as software it is a very personal preference type of thing but for me I have moved away from Photomatix and have been using Nik Photo Efex Pro.  There are a lot of reasons but the biggest one for me is that the controls are very easy to understand and still very powerful.  My HDR style, for the most part is that I don't want anybody to know for sure if it is HDR or not.  HDR Efex lets me create wide dynamic range captures and wrangle them into something believable.

This book:  The HDR Book: Unlocking the Pros' Hottest Post-Processing Techniques by Rafael Conception is fantastic for understanding HDR theory and practice.
