How many clicks is too many?

I have been a photographer for over 25 years and my first DSLR was a Canon I think 300D around 2002

Since digital has evolved I feel I often take far too many shots.

I recently went on a one day advanced photographer course focusing on light and composition.

we were told to go and take images and return in an hour, I came back with 72 shots which the tutor was shocked by. I think he had expected 20 or so, and the rest of the class were around 30.

Now I had taken several shots at different exposures of the same scene and slightly different angles etc.

I went to London last weekend for 4 day and too 804 images!

my question is ;   In the days of digital do we have a machine gun approach to photography or should we view each click of the button one we should have to pay for like film days?

The tutor on this course was certainly of the opinion that photographers should have a far more considered approach before they press the button.

Just wondered what your views were.
