I did a 2 month trip in 2004. Took 2 1d2 bodies with me, 70-200/2.8, 16-35, 15mmFE and 300/2.8. The kit was VERY heavy, but worth every ounce of grunt. The wildlife is not skitish at all down there and you'll get quite close - so 300/2.8 was probably overkill, but got amazing portraits from that. (Some samples on my website www.vividafrica.co.za under portfolios->antarctica)

So my advice would be to try and get at least 2 bodies of which one should be pro-spec. You will be there for a long time and conditions will be harsh - the 1d series can handle that. How about a 1dsIII and 7d or 1dsIII and 5dII?
