D600 Workflow Question

I had always just shot JPEG but decided I wasn't getting the best out of my gear.  After getting some pretty poor results to start with (importing the NEF's straight into Aperture) I did some research and discovered that I should:

1) Import the NEF's into View NX2

2) Convert these files to 16 bit TIFF's

3) Import these TIFF's into Aperture 3 for cropping and minor editing

The results are fantastic - it has transformed my photography!  I don't have too many adjustments to make - it's a bit slower than before, but not oppressively so.

However. . . I end up with 140MB files and I am rapidly running out of disk space.  What is the best way to compress these files without losing too much information?  Or should I just invest in a 1.5TB external hard drive?

Any advice appreciated!
