My D7000 focus testing

Hi all

I picked up my new D7000 yesterday (upgrading from a D5000) and I've been reading a fair bit about it, in particular the autofocus system. I'd read that the AF system is a big step up from the D5000, that's certainly true.

Anyway, I thought I'd do my own focus testing to check that everything was working, and to learn more about how the focus system works. I'm posting my procedure and results so that others who have done this might check to see if I've done it the right way.

Test setup:

D7000 and 35/1.8G lens;
Mounted on tripod approx 1.5m from test target;
Aligned as best I could to the target;
Bright room, well lit by natural light;
Test target printed on 5 x A4 sheets, set up as seen below.

Camera settings:

Manual mode, shutter 1/125, aperture 1.8, ISO 100;
AF-S single point autofocus, centre point selected;
Shot in Raw;
Triggered by IR remote.

Take 2 reference shots in LiveView;
Take 3 test shots in PDAF;
All shots focused on middle of the centre target;
Manually rack focus to infinity before each test shot;
Images opened up in CNX2, no sharpening or any other post processing applied.

I realise this test won't show how much or which direction AF was out, but if a problem did occur I would set up a different test with some depth/distance measures.

Results are below.  All looks pretty good, I can't really pick up any difference between the Liveview and the AF shots.  Got some fringing on a couple but not sure why.

Test target set up.  This is the full image, neatly fills the frame at 1.5m with the 35mm

LiveView reference shot, 100% crop centre.

Autofocus test 1, 100% crop centre.

Autofocus test 2, 100% centre crop.

Autofocus test 3, 100% centre crop.

Critiques and comments welcome.
