What happened to the images on the forum?

I don't see how any of this should be an impediment.

Learn how to present information properly, and I'm sure DPReview will revise its policy.

My guess is, some sort of bandwidth limit has been placed on image presentation size, as a matter of file size problems, particularly since there is an inclination to present high resolution images to illustrate a point.

I don't think you need do so.  Make the image as large as God instructs you, but surely do the telecom industry a favour by employing modern data truncation.  To not do so is lazy, and I guess DPReview has decided it doesn't want to foot the bill for the sake of an insistence on high data.

There is plenty of advice out there on how to do it.  If you don't want to, then host the images elsewhere, and let somebody else pay the bandwidth piper. You can still present them here.
