Lens of D800 AF issue

If you have the D800 AF defect, under set conditions, the left will always be worse that the right bank. Not just some of the time.  Conditions are wide fast lens wide open, tripod, good lighting and shutter speed, and a good target.  All things equal, the right will lock and be in focus, as well as can be reasonably expected for the particular lens and f stop.  The left will lock, but be noticeably oof vs. the right.  All the time.

If you are only getting this some times, you may want to consider the target, and perhaps lighting ... is that why you are using a delay?  I found using Lensalign that poor lighting can have an effect.  The target needs to we well lighted.
