Nikon D3 and MMA/Boxing/Muay Thai Focus Help
I am a Nikon D3 boxing/MMA/Muay Thai shooter, typically with the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens when ringside.
Despite using a specific focus point when shooting AF-C, I always seem to catch behind, below, beside, or above – but rarely spot-on focus where the focus point is. I’ve tried a multitude of settings (see below) but I struggle with capturing tack-sharp focus many times. I use the shutter release as release + focus and the AF-on button to focus sometimes.
a1 AF-C priority selection: Release + focus
a3 Dynamic 9, 21, and 51
a4 focus tracking off/on short, normal, and long
a8 AF point 11 and 51
For fast moving sports such as boxing/kick boxing, what camera settings to you recommend?
When using the AF-ON, must I hold it down continuously? It is possible that I am depressing the button at times while the shutter is actuating. This shouldn’t matter as the release is also focusing.
For the other fast sports shooters, what setup are you using?
