Re: "Long Term" budget storage?

Thanks for all the info people.

I know discs and tape are out of the question, as my laptop doesn't have an amazing disc drive and I don't have a tape deck.

I will definitely leave my work on the drive it's on for the time being, and I plan on replacing my work drive (1-2 tb external hard drive) every few years.

So that leaves me with solid state drives, flash drives, and regular external hard drives.

I guess my question is now, how long will an external hard drive last vs a flash drive if it's going to be stored for long periods of time? Whatever I use I plan on storing like I would a batch of negatives, just stored away in a container in my desk. I'll maybe take it out a few times a year if I need to access/check data, but other than that it will be stored away. I only plan on keeping the media for 3-5 years, then transferring it to newer/fresh media. I don't expect it to last 100 years or anything.

If I go with this replace/refresh after 3-5 years will an external hard drive suffice? or would flash memory be a safer bet?
