The Nikon sensor here is *accurately* capturing the severity of the Nikon 85mm 1.8's longitudinal CA which is about 1-2 stops worse than Canon's 20 year old USM version which is both reliable and fast in AF as well as being cheaper.

Longitudinal CA is one thing, but the Nikkor has a real resolution advantage wide open, for instance from SLRGear's tests:

In fact the 24-70 is not a standard portrait length zoom...it is the 70-200 which Canon offers plenty of options.  And its the portrait primes such as the 85's, 100mm, and 135L which Canon also does a banging job at.

That's true, but Nikon bangs the drums also. Both the new 85's are pretty good (longitudinal CA apart) and the 105/2 DC is excellent, as well as having simply beautiful portrait rendering and also the DC control. Here's the 105/2DC agains the Canon 100/2.8 Macro (SLRGear hasn't tested the 100/2)

and the 135/2DC is in the same class, as is the Canon 135/2L.

Essentially, around the 85-135mm range these systems are even, although some of the images I'm seeing from the DC lenses have a special quality about them I'm finding very beguiling. Some people say the same about the 85/1.2L, so there again it's different but much the same.
