The 70-300 is a FX full frame lens.  In most cases, the best part of the glass is the central region, so in this case, when you shoot DX,  you're getting the best part of a lens that is already built better with glass that was of a higher quality AFAIK.

Of course you are paying for that.  I see that the 70-300 is actually closer to 600 dollars.
