Fine with live view on a tripod but a recipe for disaster otherwise. Yes dof is very shallow at close distances but the main focus problem is the focus shift from about f2-f4 which is usually not much of an issue but needs to be recognized and worked around for some shots.

On the 5DIII AF wide open is not a problem, at least as far as the size of the (spot)AF point allows you to select where you want to AF. The camera performs flawlessly. The 1DIV is also very good, I assume the 1DX even better. The 7D, 1D(s)III and older bodies can have problems at times in my experience-not unusable just a lower percentage of really sharp shots.
