I own the DCR-250 and use it as a poor man macro lens with my Tamron 70-300. I did several tests to find the effective magnification ratio at different focal lengths. What I found is that the magnification ratio is equal to the lens focal length (in mm) divided by 125.

By the way 125mm is the focal length of the extension and it is also the minimum focusing distance when the lens is set to infinity.

Like others said, it is very hard to focus because depth of field is so shallow. I usually use a tripod, manual focus, high f-stop and wireless flash(es).
