DNG the RAW answer

Yes, DNG itself is indeed a RAW format that can store the necessary data at capture in lossless as well as lossy compression. There are camera manufacturers that generate their RAW images in DNG format.

However, when one is converting an NEF file from Nikon camera into DNG format, the DNG file does not include all the meta data as included in the NEF files. So, the resulting DNG file is not entirely equivalent to the NEF file.
