DNG the RAW answer

Not sure DNG is raw for Nikon cameras

Adobe has to interpret the NEF data if you're converting the files to DNG, so I wouldn't call it a true raw file.  If you had something like a Leica M9, which saves files in DNG format, that would be closer to what most people think of as raw.  Since DNG is a Adobe-led format, I'm not surprised that they would load faster than NEFs.  I could be wrong though.
