I was looking for a 70-200 last time I saved up my pennies to purchase a new lens. At the time it was either the 24-70 or the 70-200. . . and I went with the 24-70. I love it, especially after I upgraded from the D80 to the D300s.

Now I am revisiting the 70-200, but find that there is now a VR II lens for about $700 more than they were when I was last looking. The question I have, since I own all Nikon lenses, is how much of a difference is there between the Non-Nikon manufacturers? Also not sure if I should stick with the 70-200 or look at the 80-200.

Occasionally I have been using my 18-200, but after this last weekend I have found that this lens is not getting the job done for me anymore. I just did a quick look at B&H since that is where I purchase most of my gear. Pricing is a little varied, so I was curious about other manufacturers. Any advice, or direction pointing, would be greatly appreciated.

Nikon: $2,396.96 (AF-S Nikkor, f/2.8 ED VR II)
Sigma: $1,399.00 (f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM)
Tamron: $769.00 (f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF)

I had terrible experiences with sigma 70-200 combined with Nikon camera bodies

My Opinion: Although physical build of the lens is spectacular, its not a good option for Nikon Users imo....Produces extremely washed out images and very soft at 200mm (DpReview on this lens seems to agree with me too).
