First of all, let me state that I do not have the E-M5. I only have the E-P3.

I tend to agree that colours on these new cameras are a little bit washed, compared with my 4/3's cameras. But, without much fuss, I believe that choosing a different colour mode may overcame this.

I'm using my E-P3 with vibrant colour mode, and things look much better. Probably you'll find that the same works on the E-M5. Besides all this, one can make so many adjustments on camera settings, that eventually one may be able to find the right setting.

However I do accept that for those used to the old E1, things were much more simpler. Colours were just perfect right out of camera, without much processing. But we are not speaking of old cameras.

Just my thoughts.
