Thanks everyone.

Skeeterbytes, I know what you mean about stabilization. My Slik 500DX has always been a good set of sticks until the 300mm came along; then it was like jello. I made a wooden Berleback clone since I do a little wood working, but it's huge. Diddo on the million dollar gimbal. Opteka makes one for about half a million, that I might spring for though because for really big glass, tracking is really difficult. I'd love an Acratech ball head and some Feisol legs some day too. This is an expensive hobby, but at least my hobby isn't flying jets.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I've been using Acratech ball heads for years. They're good, but I'm not sure they're exactly what you need. With the 50-200 they suffer from some creep. Photographing the moon is an exercise in frustration. However for general landape use they're pretty good - very solid, not too heavy, very reliable.
