Canon SX40 would suit you. I own one and it suits my needs. The 35x zoom lens is fantastic and so is the IQ of the pictures it produces. It has Digic 5 Processor, not Digic 4.

But, I also have a compact camera with a f/1.8-2.4 lens, 1/1.7" sensor and 3x zoom. And this is the one I use for indoor, low light pictures.

Note that the SX40 does not use AA batteries.

A Target Store by me has SX40 on Clearance for $220. I'm guessing it is for the display model with that price sticker on it. Maybe worth your time to check out.

That was my mistake; I meant that the SX50 apparently only has a DIGIC 4, and as such, it may not perform as well in low-light.

What kind of compact camera do you have?  If I could find one for $75, that just might be my solution in addition to the SX40 (it is a little big to put in a purse when out with friends!).

I don't mind that the SX40 doesn't take AAs.  I could just buy extra batteries.  I was planning on going to Target.  I think I saw one there a month ago, before I was seriously looking (I had a hard time shooting at a wedding this weekend, and even flowers in my apartment appeared blue, not purple, yesterday).
