JPEG Vs RAW - why RAW is overrated...

RAW is wonderful!

Funny how strongly we all feel about our opinions...

I only shoot raw because I stink at exposure, framing and don't want to be bothered with white balance. For me it is all about the moment and getting the shot. I can fix everything later. Also, JPEG is an 8 bit, compressed representation of the data. As an ex-physicist, the idea of throwing out data when I don't have to is repugnant (worked way to hard for every scrap of data in to old days to discard anything).

With DPP I can always create the original JPG when I want it but I have options that just a JPG limits. Why should I limit myself when I don't have to? Storage is cheap. Many times I have revisited a RAW file and reprocessed it for a better, more interesting result. The same could be said to JPG but there are more options with RAW.

Enjoy your JPGs, as I enjoy my RAW files.
