DNG is not "just" a container, whatever that means! It is a true raw file format, with much more metadata than typical other raw file formats to describe the camera characteristics in a way that those other raw file format doesn't.

(So it is the only true archival raw file format. Have a look in Wikipedia or my website and blog. Or download the specification from the Adobe website - unlike nearly all other raw file formats, the specification is freely available).
