canon 1100 + tamron 18-270 (== 27- 405, 35mm equ) . if cropped 70% center,will give 1.43 times zoom , i.e. 578 mm , which is nearly 600 mm. given that C1100 is APS sensor, ISO 500 would match

noise performance of Pana fz 200 @iso 100, and compensate for the f6.3 tamron @405 mm.

Now this combination would give better dynamic  range than FZ 200. the cost of the above combo in discount stores may not be very much higher than fz 200!!

Your image calculations aside, the Canon equipment combination you suggest (even with discounts) would run, according to my calculations, somewhere in the neighborhood of $1200.  I don't see how anyone can consider such a cost to be "not much higher" than the $549 discount cost of the FZ200.  Plus the Canon does not have an articulated LCD screen, has a slightly smaller screen size which is also about 1/2 the resolution of the FZ200, no HD or high-speed video (not many cameras do have this FZ200 feature), the minimum shutter speed is 30 seconds (the FZ200 is 1 minute), the Canon burst shoots at 3 fps - the FZ200 at 12 fps, there's no internal storage capability (maybe not that important these days) - but it does have a 20% longer battery life and a built-in time lapse feature!  My point is not that the Canon combo and potential image quality is lacking -- it's that IQ comparisons should not be the only deciding factor is determining the value and capability of the FZ200.  No one is claiming that the FZ200 is equivalent to a large sensor DLSR, but you've got to concede that the FZ200 is no sloutch when it comes to IQ dynamic range either -- and all its many features for $549!
