Canon's problem is they care more about image quality and the usefulness of the photographic tool than they do about pandering to the lowest common denominator.  Shame on Canon for selling millions of cameras and still creating high quality products!

Err... then why do images from Sony cameras look as good or better than Canon?

I suspect you're just being (irrationally) loyal to a brand. Canon's quality and innovation has been on the wane for years. There is no good reason to be loyal to them (or any company). The most exciting and interesting new products are coming from Sony, Fuji etc., not Canon. The EOS-M is already blown away by several competing products, and it's not even released yet.
