IMO cropping would destroy the ambience - and "feel" of the image. In essence it would crop away what the 50mm shot wide open, caracter.

He does have a point. If the subject of the picture is the person hugging the dog then the expression or the feel was lost in the rest of the picture.

Or if you're trying to capture the feel of the forest instead, then having them off center adds a lot more dimension.
