The new forum format sucks

DPR becomes Down-voting due to Personal Reasons? Oh dear...
Indeed. Even helpful and completely innocent posts are down-voted... hopefully the DPReview staff will be able to handle such situations properly.

Hmm... I don't think the new format is that bad; I'll give it few days to get used with it.

And of course, my post was immediately down-voted.

Did you really expect people to love you when you down-vote others or abuse the Complain button like there is no tomorrow?

What are you talking about? I haven't down-voted anyone yet, I wouldn't do it without a good reason (i.e. the content of the post, and not the poster) and the very few times I've used the Complain button were perfectly justifiable.

Were you down-voting me just because you assumed I'm doing the same to you? If so, it only proves the system is ineffective.

"molested" : I cannot think of a more perfect word to describe what is now being done by DPR's new image display function.

Re-downsizing each time it is viewed - for each individual user, would be an even bigger waste of time and resources. They are storing a down-sized version for continual use - the same one that each user sees before he clicks on "Original Size" to view the 'actual' shot. They even re-name the shot as it's stored on their servers (TS940x940) seems to be the default.

I find it distracting that you switch from a black background to a white background when you open a post.

Also the fact that you don't see that many threads or replies.

What's with the "Rate this post" section? A new lazy way to troll. Yeah, it's too much effort to make an intelligent reply I'll just vote no on "Rate this post". :)

Himalayan Tahr say thumbs down

Not impressed by these changes - at best a lateral shift rather than an upgrade. Whatever happend to "if it ain't borke, don't fix it"?

src="/files/w/TS560x560?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.michaelfastphotography.com%2Fgalleries%2Fk-5%2Fmacros%2Fspidvscent%2Fimages%2F_K5AP26245a.jpg&signature=65xa3g3/jrpCVm36lhotWi88SbY="

files/w/ is the directory of application TS560x560 which is given the url to my photo and a signature

now i assume as long as the signature is valid you can view the file with this url

forums.dpreview.com/files/w/TS560x560?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.michaelfastphotography.com%2Fgalleries%2Fk-5%2Fmacros%2Fspidvscent%2Fimages%2F_K5AP26245a.jpg&signature=65xa3g3/jrpCVm36lhotWi88SbY=;

if the signature is wrong then the file doesn't come up.

so they are showing molested versions of the photos, the molesting program is TS560x560.

Everybody's useful feedback might be better served here:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/10/03/New-dpreview-forum-system-launched

Noticed there are 547 responses in only one day ;-)

Maybe one mega complaint posted over there with everyone's critiques pasted into one might make an impact. I imagine they are more likely to be noticed over there.

They must be snowed with so many things to fix. I wonder if it wouldn't serve best to just revert to the old format, fix it and try again after that. Maybe too much for them, painted into a corner.

... they are taking the downsizing issue seriously. That being said, every photo posted on this forum is, in one form or another, stored by every person who views it - directly to the cache of their browser. I'm not really so bothered by that as I am by the fact that they've actually hurt the bread and butter of this site (equipment and photo-sharing discussion) with some of their choices and/or lack of proper testing of forum software.

I suspect there's no going back.

When I tried to submit a bug in the Open Talk forum, I was directed to fill out a Feedback instead. You can find the Feedback link at the bottom of the page.
