I feel your pain.

I've also had my Nikkor AFS 28-70mm F2.8 (AKA "the Beast") fail in the same way. I think it was $350 or so for the fix a couple of years ago. I also had a 300mm AFS f2.8 D fail in the same way.

My 24mm PC-E needs to be readjusted so I can tighten it enough to keep it from moving when using the shift and last but not least my D3's rear LCD is fogged and has what looks like a winding trail left by a very small bug between the LCD and the glass???
