Is it overkill to have the polarizing filter over a uv filter when outside?

The UV filter's main function is to protect your lens from getting scratched. UV rays don't really affect digital sensor as it does film and the UV filter will probably not provide any enhancement to your picture beside protecting your lens.

UV filter will not interfere with your polarizing filter.
I have never seen this mentioned, maybe because it is a dumb
question:) Anyway, I know that the polarizer cuts light and
brightens blue skies, but a uv filter also cuts down uv light. Can
having these filters on at the same time might cancel each other
out? I always have the UV filter on as to protect the lens.

If you use a polarizer, take off the UV filter. The only perceived benefit of the UV filter is protection, and with the polarizer on, you take care of that role.

Owen: A polarizer is used to eliminate and or control reflections off your subject. Such as if you photograph an automobile you will notice lots of relfections from the galss. Add a rotating polarizer and watch as you rotate it and see how the reflections and glare are removed. It also works on water like a pond or lake or sea. Also, I use a polarizer in landscape photography to eliminate all the glare and reflections from the leaves on the treas. It will make your photos look better.

Remember a polarizer is not just for blue skies. Keep the polarizer in its holder and use it only when you need to remove reflections and glare. Otherwise keep it safe in your camera bag. No need to keep it on your camera all the time. Like other tools, use it when you need its ability.

Try it and you will grow to like it.

Thanks for everyones' advice. I will try what was said and see how everything goes. There has not been much sun here lately so reflections have not been a problem. Also, the snow is unfortunately making another appearance here, and everything is an ugly brown.

I have a Quantaray brand circular polarizer. Any name brand circular polarizer will work for you. Just make sure its a "circular" . This way you can thread it onto your lens then view thru your camera and rotate the polarizer and you can see the results of the changing views as you rotate it.

For the F717, get yourself a Linear Polarizer and save money. My Hoya Multicoated (HMC) polarizer has threaded front and its relatively good.

I have used circular polarizers since 1973 photographing thru SLR cameras and now thru Sony 717. There is nothing about an SLR mirror that requires anything special. The view thru my SLR and my Sony are the same. When you view a "shot" you have set up, say an auto or some landscape, and you view thru the SLR and or the Sony 717, and then rotate the polarizer while viewing thru either camera, you will notice the change in the amount of reflections from the auto glass and or reflections from the folage in the landscape.

A Linear is just that. It works in one "plane" only. A rotating polarizer is able to rotate two together so that it can adjust the view exactly the way the photographer wants it. A linear will work for general snap shots but you will notice that professionals use rotating polarizers.

There is a difference between the two in cost. There is a reason the rotating version cost more. It will do more for the photographer.

Where did you find a Hoya (HMC) that wasn't a circular? I could only find the Hoya CP not LP that had multicoatings.

I asked Tim Grey this very question several days ago, having kept a UV filter on the f717 for protection only - since it doesn't do anything with digitals. His suggestion was to remove it as it might subtly degrade performance. Thus it seems to me that it's better not to keep it on as a second "barrier" when you are using a polarizer. I have a circular by the way.
