Just wondering how many people use a lens shade. If you do, under what circumstances do you use one?

I typically don't use one, but I wish I did this past weekend.. A bad sun flare ruined a otherwise nice picture.

TIA,

use it. all the time. you never know when some flare will make it into one of you pics. sometimes even if you see no flare it will affect contrast and color saturation.

I always use lens shades for - except for one for which I don't have a shade.

No matter what the shape of the shade, it always helps at least a little to keep the contrast up. Of course, a few obvious images cannot be helped by the shade. In addition, it provides a bit of lens protection.

I wish the manufacturers would make shades designed for the 1.5 factor digital cameras - this would be an added improvement.

I have (and use) a lens shade for every lens I own, all the time.

If you want flare, Photshop does a pretty good job of it, plus you can control it. Also, using a hood virtually eliminates reflection from the front lens element.

Using a lens without a hood feels very strange if you're used to using one. A bit like driving without a seatbelt.

i go by the rule of thumb, that if a manufacturer packages there lens with a lens hood, you better use it religously. if not...oh well...no lens hood needed in my opinion.

I have a rubber lens hood that will collapse for each lens that stays on all of the time. I may not need it all of the time but I use one all of the time. My outlook is that it won't hurt but it sure may help my photos.

although a canon shooter i notice that all the L lenses of canon come with a lens hood - and i would guess the same for the professional Nikon glass although i don't know for sure

I agree, a lens shade will always improve saturation and contrast, as well as cut flare, which is the Devil in all this.

I really think the stock shade for the 17-35mm does not take into account the 1.5 CCD crop. It is so wide It really does little when shooting into a spectral light source.

I recently bought a Nikon 72mm polarizer and HN-29 shade for the 17-35mm and now that thing really WORKS, though it vignettes up to 24mm, since I have found that about 28mm to 35mm is the best focal length for stitched panoramas, it is cool for those and really keeps out the stray light.

We need 1.5 CCD crop sized shades now!

Cheers,

They are seldom not needed, always helpful and many time critical for a good shot...
