Who buys from KEH?

Who buys from KEH, really? They have a good reputation, and I sometimes surf their website. And I even heard that they routinely "under rate" their used products (a benefit to the costomer), but still, their used stuff seems to be very pricy. Consider this:

KEH has a Canon 17-35 f/2.8 lens rated "Like New" for $1169

on Ebay you can get a new 16-35 f/2.8 for $1259 (buy it now price, from a seller with more than 4000 positive, 98% feedbacks)

So for $90 more, you get a lens that is a generation newer and in new condition, not to mention it is 1mm wider too! For comparison, a used 17-35 usually goes for around $800-900 on Ebay.

and this:

KEH has a EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 rated "Like New Minus" for $205
but B&H sells the same lens, new (though "imported") for $200

So at KEH you end up paying more for a used lens!

They have some good stuff, but every time I look at their price I keep shaking my head.

But what do I know? I'm just a servant to the ancient Sumerian god, Gozer the Gozerian. Keymaster

Oly E10 - Canon 10D - 28-135 IS - A bunch of other stuff

They have a deal on some things once in a while. I saw a 85L 1.2 for a good deal a few weeks ago but overall they are a rip-off.

I was in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago and I contacted them about a trade. They wouldn't even talk about it. They gave me some bogus line about purchasing and selling being different entities and they couldn't work together. They wanted to steal my 100-400L IS and charge me almost new prices for new lenses. I was interested in a fair trade but they weren't.

Where do they get business from?

once. It was the EF180 f3.5L macro. It was indistinguishable from new IMO . . box and hood AND HARD case!! . . for $995. B&H price $1190 gray and $1219 USA.

To this day, I think they just made a mistake in pricing it.

I agree, their prices are usually not at all attractive but I still browse the catalog they insist on sending me.

I buy FD lenses from KEH. Very good prices.

For EOS equipment, KEH is overpriced, that's for sure.

I have ordered two lenses from them--the older 100 macro 2.8 not USM and the old 80-200L non USM. I was pleased with both and saved plenty over the new versions. Both lenses were clean and functioned well as described.

I prefer to buy from them because there is a company to stand behind the product if I'm not pleased.

KEH had a discontinued lens that I couldn't find anywhere else. The price was within what I'd been told was reasonable for it. The condition was as described.

And of course there is always more risk involved with an eBay purchase (even accounts with lots of positives have sometimes been hijacked) - a lot of people are willing to pay a bit more for the security of a reputable dealer, that's why you see people spend more at B&H than is advertised at the Brooklyn scammer shops.

I bought my Hasselblad 500CM kit and Elan II from them. Both are in better condition than they rated them at. Plus, the sales guy was very helpful and courteous. I got both at very good prices but sometimes they sell something more expensive than other merchants, so you just have to scour for the good deals :-) I would rate them 5 out of 5 though.

it really depends on what you get. For my 100-300 5.6L, I got it from KEH in pristine condition for less ($280 vs $315) then what it was going on ebay.

In general their used equipment is underrated in quality. Their very honest and if anything goes wrong they're more then happy to refund your $$.

I have found them to be first rate, every used product (cameras, lenses, flashes) I have bought from them was better than I expected. I knew the price before I ordered, considered it to be reasonable, and was pleased with the product I received.

As with any dealer, there will be items which I consider to be overpriced, their prices on new and previously owned Canon DSLR's have never seemed particularly attractive to me. However, when the EOS 10D was announced I called several dealers including KEH and they quoted the going price of $1,499. They also had the BG-ED3 in stock for $169. KEH delivered the camera and grip to me on March 15th.

Real people, real service when you need it, and when they say it shipped, it shipped. (They charged me $32 for Fed Ex next day.) I have no qualms about recommending KEH to my friends and have done so many times.

Ken Hansen knows his customers. He's not looking for the guy who buys the latest piece of equipment, tries it for a week, then sends it back because it "doesn't meet his expectations." When you have the lowest price on an item you often get buyers who are more trouble than they are worth. Some retailers specialize in buyers whose time is valuable and who are willing to pay extra for the retailer's expertise and reliability.

I have bought several lenses from them along with flash and other items with nary a problem. The prices were actually lower than what I was tracking on ebay, they offer service after the sell, and once I had an item damaged in shipment (umbrella), sent them a pic of it, and they issued a credit for it, no problem at all. I too rate them a 5 of 5 and have absolutely no problem with recommending them to my friends. I wil tell them though to make sure they shop around first and to look for their sale items. It's been my experience they have one of the largest selection of used glass.
