Like, I don't mean to be starting a troll--this isn't a troll.

But I am, like, pretty shocked by the low quality of the photographs that I've seen from forum members at pbase. This is not true across the board--I have seen some good ones.

But it's kind of funny how some people are all tied up in cameras, who have the latest and the very best currently available, and you go to their pbase site and see some very, very ordinary pictures of their kids, some vacation pictures, maybe a picture of a flower in the back yard.

I don't have anything up at pbase yet, so I guess I'm open to criticism for that. I'll admit that if some of my stuff were up at pbase, it wouldn't be National Geographic quality--for sure.

But then I don't have the latest and the best photo equipment--yet.

Hi

But as you probably already know, people are on this forum to discuss equipment. Sure, you'll probably see someone with a Canon 1Ds with ordinairy shots od his kids but I mean why judge people (this is not to slag you or anything, just an observation, I don't know you and surely don't want to insult you) with expensive equipement. I mean if you have the money and you enjoy the latest and greatest, why not threat yourself to a nice piece of equipement. Take me for example, I started photography about 1 year and a half ago, I'm certainly not remotely a great photographer, but I wanted good equipement, so I got myself a D60 with some nice lenses. I still have so much too learn, I don't think I even scratched the surface yet of this wonderfull hobby, but I enjoy having good equipement to work with and to learn with. I think the best approach is to comment on the photo you see and try to help people to learn. You can probably help somebody out just by giving out some tips so why not. I know I always enjoy it when people give me some good tips. You know, everybody needs to start somewhere ;-)

Yeah, a lot of it is knowing when a good shot might be there and getting it.

Like, so many of these pictures, are, like, Kodak moments.

Why not? Gadgets are fun to play with.

And you started out at the top with a D60.

LOL.
I looked at your galleries and you've got some very decent shots there, dude. Good job, really. It's clear you've got some idea about things. Keep shooting. I'm going to try to get time to make some comments at your galleries. You know, it's all a matter of taste, but I did think you had a couple of ordinary shots, but there were more that were good.

Your gallery is most definitely not the type of gallery I was commenting on.

I'm shooting with a 2 mp camera that's a couple years old. It hasn't been formally discontinued by the manufacturer, but you don't see them in the stores anymore and production has stopped. I like the replies you've received so far on this thread. No bashing or anything yet, that's good.

Here is my gallery of favorites at Pbase. I always appreciate receiving hints and tips at making my photos better through composition and/or lighting since I am shooting on a very limited budget for the moment and can't go right out to buy a better camera. But I'm thinking about upgrading this year. Any comments or tips on the photos are always appreciated.

as an "old newbie" at digital, i use Pbase as a way to 1) get feedback on what i have done wrong 2) let my family (& friends) that are spread out over 4 (12) states to "share" my photos and 3) to have a place to "link" my pics to this site for "thread sharing" pics....... i am not a professional, but i am learning and getting better (but gary, thats just showing off man LOL GREAT shots).

these are not pics that i thought would be "sellers"...... (you know what i mean?) if i thought they would be, i would put them on stock libraries (or whatever they are called).

That's what 99% of this forum and pbase are all about.

Was just about to reply along those lines, but Melanie put it much more succinctly and eloquently than I could have.
Very good response.

Some really good shots there. Since I've started this thread, I've seen the three best galleries I've seen since I've been lurking and posting at dpreview: yours, Joel's, and Melinda's.

You know, I'm shooting digital with a 3.2 megapixel--I've stll got my film SLR's, Canon's--but haven't used them in years. 2 mp is not enough and 3 is not enough and 6 is not enough and 12 is not enough. So you might as well have 2. I can do a tiny bit of cropping with the 3.2, but I don't suppose you can do hardly any with the 2.

Yeah, that's basically what I use Pbase for also. It's a place to share photos. I've had some other galleries on there which were just for specific people after I shot photos of them mainly for fun. But I like to keep my favorites there too. It's a convenient place to link to.

I think people can get some great shots with less than optimal equipment, but when it comes to printing larger sizes, that's another story. My 2 mp camera can print 4x6 and 5x7, but 8x10 starts to lose some detail in many of the shots. It depends on the subject, some look very good. It's one of the main reasons I'm looking to upgrade, I'd like to print larger on occasions.

Thanks for the nice comment, Melanie. I'm always glad to hear when someone enjoys the shots. Your work is very good too, I had visited your website before.

G

You're right, you can't crop much with a 2 mp camera. On my particular camera, the 10x optical stabilized zoom lens helps you frame shot the way you want when you shoot it. It's an Olympus C-2100UZ. I'm generally happy with the way most of them look on the screen but I would like to print larger sizes. Having said that, I DO see the difference on screen when people post shots from the D60, D100, D1x, all those cameras, they look great. I like the shots from the Sony F717 also. I'm anxious to see Sony's next model.

OK...you are forgiven...my stuff will never be National Geographic quality.

Well, neither do I.

However, I think you miss the point. My pbase account is primarily so my friends and family can see my kids if they are unable to visit. If you want art photos, don't visit my site, please!!! However, I've found and come to enjoy the dpreview forums...and I sometimes post photos to the forum...and I use my pbase account!!! It's a sin...I have a "forum pics" gallery on my family pbase account!!! shock Gasp !!!!!!...

Get a clue, dude.

;-)
all in fun.

Though I do have a higher res digital, I find 3MP to be quite sufficient for most of my landscape shots, and all print out fine at 8X10.

Though these are'nt National Geographic quality images either, I think they're alright for showing what a decent 3MP cam can do. 2MP can do practically the same.

Resolution is way over-rated. It's the light, compositions and artistry that counts.

Thanks for the kind words on my galleries. I guess you found out trough other replys as well that lots of people on Pbase use it to share photos with family or things like that. So I guess that judging peoples photography by their galleries on Pbase can be deceiving. But as I said, why not give people some tips politely on what you see, I for one do enjoy it when someone takes the time to point out something that did not go to well with my pictures.

This is an interesting thread and you got some great answers.

Have a nice day!
